The Thrillseeker LA is a very versatile compressor. In many ways it works like an OPTO compressor but although some people on the internet describe it as a free version of the LA-2A it is much more flexible than that. First of all you have faster attack times both attack and release times are dependant on the incoming audio material — just as is the case with the LA-2A — but you can tweak and control the timing to some extend with the attack and release knobs.

Variety of Sound has also given us control over the total harmonic distortion THD with the interstage section. Once you have found the right amount of compression and adjusted the attack and release to your liking you can turn on the interstage section and add 2 order harmonics.

If you want to go further than that you can use the slider to add even more THD and obtain thicker saturation effects. Finally you have the ability to colour the saturation effect to your needs and even switch on a transformer circuit simulation to fatten up the sound even more. Thrillseeker LA has internal and external sidechain options and in the top left corner you will find a little knob that calibrates the plugin to a conservative and advisable mix level of db.

In other words Thrillseeker LA can work as a clean compressor or as a more vintage sounding unit. It can work with much faster attack times than an LA-2A and it has its own little colour tool box in the interstage section. You can use it as a channel compressor or indeed as a bus compressor. And last but not least: it sounds amazingly good. It proves that free plugins can sound as good as commercial plugins — and be more innovative than most of them!

The SAFE Compressor is special in the sense that it allows you to type in more intuitive or descriptive terms or words into the plugins textbox — such as for instance bright, warm, punchy etc. You can save your own suggestions for semantic terms that represent a compression effect and it can then be shared with other users via the server. In other words SAFE Compressor is a unique intuitive compressor that may be of special interest to beginners.

FRComp87 is a delightfully simple vst compressor plugin. It only has a few controls: threshold, makeup gain, and three timings fast, medium, and slow. Finally, you can switch in a limiter to tame peaks after the compression. This simple yet clever design offers flat frequency response and transparent sound with automatic attack and release times that are completely program dependent. These characteristics play a big part in its smooth and transparent sound and why it is so universally revered as a vocal compressor.

This is an improvement that many mixing engineers will find useful for a wide variety of use cases, such as ducking or pumping of synth sounds in EDM. Universal Audio, Inc. Thank you very much. I am so grateful for the work you guys do. Seriously, life changing.

MSED is a professional audio encoder-decoder AU and VST plug-in for mid-side processing which is able to encode split the incoming stereo signal into two components: mid-side pair, and vice versa: decode mid-side signal pair into stereo signal. Below is our list of the best compressor VST plugins that you can download for free.

We included several different types of compressor plugins that are suitable for handling various tasks — from vocal compression and drum saturation to audio mastering. Check out these awesome plugins and listen to what a proper compressor can do for you. The eight modes of the compressor allow the Pro C2 to add some coloration to your mixes.

Version 2 adds five new modes: Vocal, Mastering, Bus, Punch, and Pumping to give you access to tailored responses to match what you are working on. Mastering engineers will appreciate the new metering. Combine this with the 4x oversampling and GPU acceleration and you have one accurate plugin. All of this functionality and versatility make this compressor a great choice for any engineer looking for a lot of features in one package.

Check out the FabFilter Pro C2 for access to a large toolset within one beautiful plugin. There are several reasons engineers have opted to use a stereo compressor on their master bus. Check out our article on Mix Bus Compression for more information. To build on its accuracy to the original, Waves added modeled analog hum from the SSL G for even more coloration abilities. This plugin is typically used for master bus compression, but also shines when your goal is to tighten up drums or piano.

Among all hardware compressors, there are a couple that stand out as studio legends. One of those legends is the Teletronix LA-2A. The LA-2A is an optical compressor with a tube output stage. Featuring slower attack and release times, and vibe to spare, the LA-2A has become known for its warmth and character that can be heard on countless records. As an optical compressor, most of the common uses of 2As include instruments with fewer transients and vocals.

Bass and vocals have been commonly treated with this style of compression, both for its smoother gain reduction and in the case of the LA-2A, for the warmth of the tube output stage. The plugin offers three variations of the compressor. The LA2 has the slowest attack and release like many s compressors, while the gray and silver models have medium-fast attack and release for a more typical response similar to the vintage LA-2As that have earned their legendary status.

Output gain and peak reduction controls are available as well as the ability to change metering and switch between limiting and compressing.

Having three modes of operation and precise emulation of analog equipment, the VintageWarmer2 is a great compressor for mixing and mastering with tons of analog saturation available.

The first mode, called MicroWarmer aims features speed, release, drive, low, high, knee, and output controls. With the addition of the shelving EQ section, this mode can be used for tone shaping while offering a scaled-back, CPU-friendly compressor. The second mode is a direct successor to the original VintageWarmer. It aims to keep low latency while adding brick wall limiting, multi-band compression, frequency selection for the EQ shelves, and more release settings.
